Medieval Badges: Their Wearers and Their Worlds (2021)
The first blog post features the announcement of Ann Marie Rasmussen’s book Medieval Badges: Their Wearers and Their Worlds (2021). The following posts include excerpts from various chapters of the book: on pilgrimage, the medieval city, and chivalry.
Badges Across Europe: Rostock, Part I - IV.
This four-part blog post series written by Dr. Ann Marie Rasmussen focusses on twenty-nine medieval badges found in the Baltic coastal town of Rostock, Germany. It summarizes a recent article by Dr. Jörg Ansorge, one of the premier archaeologists working with pilgrim badges in Germany today. The article discusses all badges that were found in Rostock by 2018 (more have been found since then). Dr. Ansorge pays meticulous attention to different kinds of evidence in order to create rich contexts for the found badges. He draws conclusions that allow us to glimpse people’s religious practices in medieval Rostock and to better understand how medieval people used their religious badges.

Student research and writing
In June 2018 and 2019, Ann Marie Rasmussen taught an undergraduate course at the University of Waterloo on medieval badges. The course culminated in a small group of students visiting England to study medieval badges, participate in museum work, and experience recreated medieval pilgrim experiences. Their research and work was contributed to an exhibition at the Lynn Museum as well as to several blog posts on this website. Additional posts have been made by research assistants on the medieval badges project.
